UCLE Marshgate

UCLE Marshgate is an 8-storey advanced research facility, a key development on the east bank section of Olympic park.   Designed by Stanton Williams and delivered by Mace in cooperation with Sheppard Robson.

The concrete-framed structure featured a structural upstand around the entire perimeter.  This upstand was encased in birch ply forming a 1 metre deep ‘bench’ detail, which meant that standard chain-operated blinds were not possible.

Décor Systems developed a unique system where the user operated the blinds via a crank handle attached to a horizontal drive rod extending back to the façade.

The Perimeos blind box system was used throughout to conceal the blind hardware.  This was extended and combined with the modular fascia system to cloak the varying gap between the frame and the façade elements.

All 8 floors featured Decor 370 Premier roller blinds in Monaco screen fabric in 1% openness.  This allows some outward vision whilst controlling glare to meet BREEAM criteria for HEA 01.

The ground floor presentation space featured a blackout blind at 4.8m wide by 7m high as a single unit, allowing the client to project media onto it.  The blind and side channels were built into the birch ply lining.

The Conservation Lab had double blinds to each window, with screen and blackout concealed in the same casing.  Blinds were fully motorised with the Decor SoftClose 230v motor system and wireless controls.
